Mary Lou Laux

November 3, 1927 — June 2, 2012

Mary Lou Laux
11-3-1927 to 6-2-2012
Mary Lou was born November 3, 1927 to Ruth and Lester Henry Zittel in Detroit, Michigan and later moved to Grosse Pointe Michigan where she graduated from Grosse Pointe High School. Shortly after the end of WWII, Mary Lou met Sam Laux through mutual friends at a social occasion in Grosse Pointe, and they married on August 20, 1949. Mary Lou, Sam and their children moved to Indianapolis in 1971 when Sam was transferred with the Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors Corporation.

When living in Grosse Pointe and Indianapolis, Mary Lou was quite active in community service, including being a Sunday school teacher, Parent Teacher Association volunteer, Girl Scout leader, Women in Neighborhood Service (WINS) volunteer, Indianapolis Museum of Art volunteer, Indiana Repertory Theater volunteer, and was part of the Indianapolis Symphony guild. Her family has great pride in her successes and the fact that she was always willing to try new things- including parasailing with her grandchildren at age 70.

Some of her happiest recollections were of the 40th wedding anniversary surprise party that was held at their home in Zionsville (kicked off by the Zionsville High School marching band), a 50th reunion tour with Sam's WWII 71st Infantry Division as the division retraced their march across Europe, and their 50th wedding anniversary celebration held on the island of Maui in Hawaii with their children and their children's spouses.

Although she enjoyed the many places that she visited throughout her life, her favorite place was always relaxing at their lake home in Sweetwater, IN where she enjoyed boating, gardening (as a registered Master Gardener), and entertaining.

Mary Lou passed away June 2, 2012 and was preceded by her husband, Sam, who died on May 12, 2008. Mary Lou is survived by her three children, Beth Hughes, Peter Laux, and Amy Greeley; as well as her four grandchildren, Lindsay (Hughes) McGregor, Thomas Hughes, and Joshua and Nathan Laux. She cherished and was active in all aspects of her extended family's lives. Her energy, smile and love will be greatly missed.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Please visit www.arnmortuary.com to leave an online condolence for the family.
