Mary Irene Miller

April 11, 1920 — March 26, 2018

Mary Irene Miller,

97, of Plainfield, passed away March 26, 2018. She was born in Switzerland County, Indiana on April 11, 1920 to Philip and Irene Given Steger. She had lived in six states and attended private and public schools in Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana. After graduating from Westport High School in 1937, she attended Vaughan School of Music, Arthur Jordan Conservatory and Butler University School of Religion (now Christian Theological Seminary). Mary was best known for her seventy-two years as a church musician, having played trumpet, piano accordion, piano and organ. During World War II, she traveled with music teams giving concerts, radio programs and entertaining throughout the Midwest, including military hospitals and military bases. In later years, she played organ for a local mortuary and worked for the Indiana Department of Welfare, retiring in 1982.

Her many extended travels took her to all fifty states and over 50 countries, many of which she visited numerous times. Mary was a long time member of the Plainfield Christian Church. With her many interest in art and music, it also gave her great pleasure to support numerous animal rights organizations. She was also a staunch supporter of the Salvation Army. She enjoyed opera and symphonic music, having been a member of the American Theatre Organ Society and Harmonie Club.

Mary will be missed by her many friends; her step-daughters, Patricia (Philip) Gibson and Linda Mazurowski; and chosen god-children, Sylvia Luker, Ying Zhou, Choeun and Angel Yen and Kim Huynh.

A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of the Plainfield Christian Church, 800 Dan Jones Rd, on Wednesday, April 11th at 11 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Plainfield Christian Church or to the Salvation Army Headquarters in Indianapolis.

Arrangements entrusted to A.R.N. Funeral & Cremation Services. Friends may leave a memory or message of condolence by visiting the online obituary at www.arnmortuary.com.
