Mary K. Newman Reid died May 16, 2012 at the age of 81. Born in Missouri, she was adopted at the age of three by the late Al and Evelyn Newman. A graduate of Shortridge High School, Mary K. was active in various civic organizations including the Women's Committee of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indiana Federation of Junior Women's Clubs, where she was a past state officer.
Under the byline "Mary K." in the 1960's, she wrote a humorous family column for the former Indianapolis Times and later for the Indianapolis Star. The column's popularity earned her interviews on several local daytime programs including the Francis Farmer Show.
Mary joined Mayflower Moving Company in 1971 as an executive assistant and worked her way through the ranks to Marketing and ultimately, Corporate Communications. She produced the company publication, The Aerogram, enjoyed by employees and stockholders alike. She served as Transportation Chairman for the first annual Mayflower Classic women's golf tournament where she developed friendships with women's golf greats such as Marlene Floyd and Nancy Lopez.
Mary joined HP Products in 1990 to manage delivery logistics. She was responsible for dispatching local deliveries throughout Central Indiana and enjoyed the camaraderie of the drivers she worked with as well as her coworkers and customers. She retired from HP Products after many productive years.
Mary K. is survived by her children, Kittie (John) Lake, Penny (Henry) Sickels, Scott (Patty) Reid, and Tammy Householder; and her granddaughters, Dusty McGregor and Alexandra Reid.
There will be no service or calling. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Indianapolis.
