Mary Ellen Simpers

May 13, 1914 — May 9, 2012

Mary Ellen Ewbank Simpers died May 9, 2012 in Indianapolis.

She was born May 13, 1914 in Kingman, Indiana, the daughter of Blanche Hartman and E. Eldo Ewbank, DDS. Raised in a musical family, she graduated from Butler's Jordon School of Music. She married a musician, Robert Simpers, at age 40 and taught elementary and high school band and chorus for the next 22 years.

Mary Ellen was an inspiration to all who knew her for her fierce independence and zest for living life to its fullest. Her joie de vivre was kindled by her desire to keep up with her beloved brother, Keith Hartman Ewbank, who went off to West Point when she was ten and continued when she went to work for her father at the Indiana Dental Association after college.

She was dedicated to preserving the natural world. In the 1950's, she and her husband designed and built Glen Fruin, a unique home in the Montgomery County woods. It remains a dedicated nature sanctuary to this day. All those who were lucky enough to visit were enchanted by its beauty and appropriateness to its setting.

Mary Ellen loved genealogy and history. She held many leadership positions in the many societies to which she belonged, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Society of Indiana Pioneers, DAC, DCW, DCH, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, Decedents of Early Quakers, etc.

She is survived by her grand nephew, Karl Keith (Kelly) Ewbank and his children, Grant and Eden; grand niece, Ahren Ewbank (Jeff Callaway) and her children, Connor and Tristan; as well as a niece by marriage, Marcia Ahrens Ewbank Krieg; and many beloved friends.

A memorial open house celebration will be held in her honor the afternoon of May 20th in Indianapolis.

Arrangements entrusted to A.R.N. Cremation Services.
