Mary Jo (De Vatz) Tilly
Mary Jo (De Vatz) Tilly joined her beloved Savior in eternity on Tuesday morning, July 26, 2016. She was married to Herman T. Tilly who preceded her to Heaven on July 30, 1998. Together, Mary Jo and Herman had three children: Herm (Christine), Tim, a.k.a. Moose (Rachel), and Gretchen. Her three grandchildren were the apple of her eye: Mary Kathryn, Laura, and David. She was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis with the exception of 10 years when she and Herman retired to Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Mary Jo was a very proud graduate of Shortridge High School and then Northwestern University, where she was awarded a bachelor of science in speech and hearing communications. She worked in the speech and hearing field before working at home to raise three rambunctious children. When her youngest child started high school, Mary Jo courageously returned to school and earned her master's degree in special education (Butler University). She worked with IPS schoolchildren to improve their speech and hearing until she retired.
While in Indianapolis, Mary Jo was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Southport and then Community Church of Greenwood. While in Michigan, she and Herman joined Charlevoix Community Church and where she maintained her membership. She was a strong believer in Jesus Christ and together with Herman, shared their faith with their children.
Her family deeply appreciates the care their mother was given by Hoosier Village, particularly the Health Center medical staff, housekeeping, and culinary.
A simple memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 31, at 1:30 p.m., in the Hoosier Village Chapel. Herman and Mary Jo were very involved in World Vision International when their children were young. So in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary Jo's memory to World Vision International or to Samaritan's Purse.
