Miss "Bill" Stackhouse

December 2, 1918 — October 31, 2012

"Miss Bill" Bradley Stackhouse, aka, Lilly Fay Bradley Stackhouse, died in Carmel, IN, on October 31, 2012. Born on December 2, 1918 in Hattiesburg , Mississippi, she was a beautiful, gracious, true Southern belle with a soft laugh, brilliant smile, and distinctive Southern drawl and demeanor. After graduation from Hattiesburg High School, she completed nursing training at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, LA, and then served as a registered nurse in the U.S. Army through the end of WWII. During her enlistment in the South, Lieutenant Bradley met and married the love of her life, a Yankee Culver Military Academy graduate, Captain Donald Stackhouse, Jr. The couple relocated to Indianapolis following the war, and later to Zionsville, IN, where they raised a family.

In 1971, they moved to Tucson, AZ, where they enjoyed many years of working, community and church involvement, and "pink mountain" sunsets in the desert. "Miss Bill" was active in Delta Sigma Kappa Sorority, The Zionsville Christian Church, a bridge group in Zionsville, and later in the Tucson Assistance League, and Unity Church of Tucson. She was known for her year-round winter white wardrobe, her amazing shrimp gumbo and crepes suzettes, gourmet entertaining and Southern hospitality, hosting frog jump fundraising events, and composing clever skits with outrageous costumes, e.g., "Big Bird" of Sesame Street. She retired from her last nursing position in a private internal medicine office in her mid-seventies, and later returned to her family in Indiana in 2001.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mamie Freeman Bradley and Oliver Bradley; sister, Mamie Pendarvis; and her devoted husband of 48 years, "Stack" Donald A. Stackhouse, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Steinkeler (Dr. Steven); son, Donald A. Stackhouse III, of Tucson; three grandchildren, Rachel Wright, David Steinkeler, and Samantha Hayton; and four great-granddaughters, Lillian and Eleanor Wright, Savannah and Lilly Hayton.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at The Donald Stackhouse Friendship Bridge, along the desert meditation path on the grounds of Unity of Tucson, Rev. Larry Swartz to preside, arrangements by Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, Zionsville, IN.

The family wishes to express tremendous gratitude to the St.Vincent Hospice staff, and to private caregivers Vajhon Humphrey and Vayana Owens for the wonderful care given to "Miss Bill" over the past several months.
