Avon

Patricia “Patty” Ann McDonald, 90, passed away surrounded by family on August 9, 2024 in Avon, Indiana. Patricia was born in Indianapolis on May 15, 1934 to the late Boyd and Stella (Jablonski) Tatum.

On June 14, 1958, she married Larry Lee McDonald at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Indianapolis. She is preceded in passing by her husband, Larry; her brother, Frank Tatum; and her sisters, Katherine Gorman and Loraine Tatum. She is survived by her three children, Brian McDonald, Teri McDonald-Kulis (Byron), and Bruce McDonald (Katie); granddaughter, Kelsey McDonald (Taylor); and 2 great-granddaughters, Ily & Lila.

In 1948, under the coaching of her father, Boyd, Patty began her journey as a pitcher in an amateur fast-pitch softball league. She quickly became known for her exceptional sling-shot pitch, a skill that carried her through a distinguished career in the sport. Upon graduating from Ben Davis High School in 1952, she worked as a secretary at Farm Bureau Insurance, all while continuing to pursue her passion for softball. Patty traveled across the country with her teams, competing in numerous national tournaments and two World Series. Her contributions to the sport were recognized in 1981 when she was inducted into the National Softball Hall of Fame, a testament to her talent and dedication.

In 1960, Patty retired from fast-pitch softball to focus on her most cherished roles: full-time mother and homemaker. She became known in her community for her baking; her sugar cookies, pumpkin rolls, and caramel corn just a few of the stand outs. She loved decorating for the holidays; Halloween, in particular, was a highlight of the year for her, and she delighted in creating a festive atmosphere that brought joy to her neighbors. You never knew what goodies she would have prepared or what costume she would be dressed in, making her home a must-visit spot every Halloween. Her baking, sewing, and gardening skills earned her numerous awards at the County Fair each year, and she took great pride in these accomplishments.

A woman of deep faith, Patty was a devoted member of St. Susanna’s Catholic Church in Plainfield for 64 years. Her involvement in the church’s Women’s Club was a source of joy and fulfillment, and she dedicated countless hours to serving her community. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and devotion to her faith will be long remembered by those who knew her.

Patty was also a proud supporter of her great granddaughters, who continue the family tradition of fast-pitch softball. She delighted in their achievements and encouraged them to pursue their dreams with the same passion and determination that she had shown throughout her life.

Services will be held at St. Susanna Catholic Church in Plainfield on September 16, 2024 with funeral Mass to begin at 11am. A graveside service will follow at approximately 1pm at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis. After the inurnment, the family invites their community back to the church, St. Susanna, for a luncheon.

In addition to her many accomplishments, Patty had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly her dogs & cats. Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Robin’s Nest (www.robinsnestofindy.org) or Misty Eyes Animal Center (www.mistyeyes.org).
