Richard Arlen Blackston,
recently of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on December 25, 2015.
Richard was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 22, 1931 to Laura (Austin) and James Blackston.
He was active in sports at Custer High School and in DeMolay where he met Carol Hoffmann. They were married in 1952, until Carol's passing in 2014--almost 62 years.
Richard was active in Boy Scouts and church in the Milwaukee community where he and Carol raised their three children. As a founding member of The Church of the Good Hope, he participated in operational activities for many years, as well as teaching Sunday School and helping Carol's work in the Food Pantry
Richard served in the Navy in the Mediterranean and Annapolis, MD from 1952 to 1956 when he returned to Milwaukee to become a manager with Olson Electronics. One of his favorite activities through Olson was Toastmasters and managers meetings to talk strategies and sales.
Richard and Carol retired to Sun City, Arizona in June of 1997, joining Carol's sister and brother in law in the "valley of the sun". He was active with Carol at New Song United Methodist Church where they helped to grow the new church. He spent many hours helping families prepare for and move into new homes through his efforts with Habitat For Humanity.
Richard and Carol moved to Indianapolis in 2009 to be closer to their daughter and son-in law. He lived with Carol at Sunrise and later moved to Brookdale of Carmel, where his dry sense of humor kept everyone on their toes. Thank you to all for your care and to everyone at IU North Hospice. You are indeed the hands of God. (And have the patience of Job!)
Richard is survived by two sisters, Carol Reese and Jo Anne Montravadi; three children: Michael (Linda), Kevin (Lyn) and Suzanne Schwartz (Kerry); four grandchildren: Korie Mitchell (Jonathan), Jason (Lisa), Jeremy (Catherine), Adam (Elizabeth); and seven great grandchildren-Olivia, Izabel, and Ean; Morgan and Lucas; Zoe and Isaac.
Richard is predeceased by his wife, Carol Hoffmann; his parents James and Laura Austin; brother, Charles and sister, Shirley Brady. A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date.
