Richard Greaves, 85, of Zionsville passed away on August 14, 2018 in his home.
Richard was born September 10, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Percy L. Greaves, Jr., noted economist and author, and Leslye Platt Greaves.
Richard graduated from high school in Bethesda, Maryland in 1950 and graduated from Stetson University, in DeLand, Florida in 1954 with a B. S. in Economics.
He first moved to Indiana from Toledo, Ohio in 1961 and, although he moved away twice for brief periods (Chicago, Ill. 1970, Diamond Bar, California 1979), he always considered the Indianapolis metropolitan area his home and was very happy to be able to return to the area, buying a residence in Zionsville in 1986.
He worked in sales, marketing, and educational positions in the computer industry in Ohio and Indiana with IBM, Burroughs Corporation, and Honeywell during the fifties and sixties. His primary hobbies during this time were skiing and playing bridge. He started several bridge games and wrote bridge columns as a hobby during the early seventies and, in 1975, he bought the Blackwood Bridge Center in Indianapolis from his friend, the world renowned bridge expert, Easley Blackwood and took over as managing director. In this capacity he continued to direct bridge games and taught bridge lessons. He earned the status of Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League.
As his family expanded, he needed more income than he could generate at the bridge center so in the late '70's he entered a new and highly successful career in the weighing industry. He had both domestic and international marketing responsibilities in the load cell business and, in two decades in the business, saw multi-million dollar increases in the sales of these products. He retired in 2001 as Vice President of Marketing of Artech Corporation of Riverside, California.
Richard is survived by his wife Lee, sons Christopher (Sunshine), Jason (Bridget), his grandchildren Athena, Skylar, Harrison, Truman, Eva, and Lucas; sister, Muriel Greaves Credle, of Nashua, NH, brother, Charles Flint Greaves (Cristy), of West Palm Beach, FL; and dog, Mattie, who with his spouse Lee, contributed so mightily to his happiness during his declining years.
Celebration of life service is August 25 at St. Francis in the Field Church in Zionsville at 10:30AM ; visitation to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Foundation for Economic Education or St. Francis Episcopal Church.
