Ronnie L. (Ron) Lowe,
74, of Whitestown and formerly of Williamsport, IN, passed away on December 12, 2015. He was born in Hoopeston, IL on January 18, 1941, but lived most of his life in Warren County. Ron suffered a stroke in 2005 and had been in declining health for the past several months.
He is survived by Karen (Holloway) Lowe, his wife of 55 years; son Scott (Marie) Lowe, daughter Tracy (Clyde) Harris, and grandchildren Nathan, Zachary, Matthew, Madison, and Alyssa. He is also survived by 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Ron graduated from Williamsport High School in 1959 and attended Oklahoma University. He served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1966, including time in Ethiopia. He was a pattern maker by trade working primarily at Tilton Pattern Works in Tilton, IL. He also worked at Harrison Steel in Attica and Fountain Foundry in Veedersburg.
Ron was a very dedicated father and grandfather and greatly loved his family. He enjoyed attending grand kids' sporting events and other activities. His sense of humor and good-natured kidding of others brought joy and laughter to those around him. He was admired and respected for his honest dealing with people and concern for others.
In addition to his family, Ron dedicated most of his adult life to serving his country and community. He served proudly in the American Legion for 52 years, and was Commander of the Department of Indiana in 1994-1995. He held many other Legion offices and chaired many committees at the local, state, and national level; and was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion. Ron also held life memberships in Veterans of Foreign Wars, Loyal Order of Moose, AmVets, ANAVICUS, and Forty and Eight. He received many honors and awards for his work in veterans organizations including Sagamore of the Wabash from IN Governor Evan Bayh and Kentucky Colonel from KY Governor Brereton Jones, both in 1995.
He was a very dedicated supporter of Hoosier Boys State and Knightstown Home for veterans' children. He spent countless hours at the Williamsport American Legion the early part of his Legion career, then at the Legion in Attica, and finally in Zionsville.
Ron also served actively in the local community for many years. He is remembered by many for his time coaching in the Williamsport Little League. He was also on the Williamsport Town Board, Williamsport Park Board, helped with Williamsport Swim Team and many other community projects.
Two Celebrations of Life are planned. The first will be at the Zionsville American Legion Post 79 on Sunday, December 20th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, with a service at 5:00. The second celebration will be at the Attica American Legion Post 52 on Saturday, January 2nd from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, with a service at 3:00. Following will be a graveside service with military honors at Highland Cemetery in Williamsport.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family is requesting donations be made to the Ron Lowe Hoosier Boys State Fund, c/o the American Legion, Department of Indiana, 5440 Herbert Lord Road, Indianapolis, IN 46216. This fund will provide scholarships for deserving high school Juniors to attend Hoosier Boys State.
