Ruthie Haber Rifkin
Long time Indianapolis resident, passed away February 11, 2015. Ruthie was born on March 1, 1943 in Zomba, Malawi,Africa to Kalman and Lily Haber, Holocaust survivors forced to flee Austria during World War II.
She was a graduate of Cornell University with a degree in child development and education. Ruthie had a lifelong dedication to Jewish education and Jewish causes. She served as Director of the Early Childhood Education Program at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation for many years while also establishing and serving as the Director of Camp K'ton, the day camp program at Goldman Union Camp Institute. Previously Ruthie taught elementary school in Chicago and ran a recreation program for children who had been burned in Minneapolis at the Hennepin County General Hospital.
Ruthie and her husband Rob were instrumental in implementing the local Russian Resettlement Program through National Council of Jewish Women, which recruited and trained volunteers to help welcome the new Jewish immigrants to Indianapolis.
She is survived by her beloved family, her husband Robert, of 46 years, daughter Danielle (Juan) Weksler of Boulder, CO; son Jordan Rifkin of Indianapolis; mother Lily Haber; grandchildren Bella, Gabriel , Eve Weksler and Kalman and Owen Rifkin and sisters Debbie and Suzanne Haber.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, 6501 North Meridian Street Indianapolis, IN 46260. Shiva will be held Sunday through Thursday at 809 Holliday Lane.
