Samuel Ralph Cohen,
100, passed away at his home on his birthday, Thursday, December 1, 2016, following a brief illness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Clara (Lichtman) Cohen; his children Denise (William) Topaz of Laguna Beach, CA; Janet (Bruce) Jenkins of Chicago, IL; and Howard (Darla) Cohen of Indianapolis; and by his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Born and raised in Indianapolis, the son of George and Lena Cohen, and brother of David Cohen and Zelda Cohen Gall, Sam graduated in 1934 from Shortridge High School. After receiving his B.S. from Purdue University in 1938 as a distinguished pharmacy student, he returned to Indianapolis to start his own pharmacy and chemical manufacturing company. He entered the United States Army, first as a medic and then in the Army Air Corps, flying missions as a tail gunner in the South Pacific as Staff Sergeant during World War II. Returning to Purdue after the war, he earned a Master's of Science degree in Pharmacology. He later served for many years as co-owner of the family business, American Auto Parts. After retiring, he returned to a career in pharmacy until the age of 74.
He served as a member of the board of directors at both the United Orthodox Hebrew Congregation and Congregation Shaarey Tefilla in Indianapolis, and as Vice Commandant of the Indiana chapter of the Jewish War Veterans. Sam became devoted to the sport of bicycling in his later years, often riding 50 miles each day and continuing, until his last months, to cycle several hours each day on a stationary bicycle.
He was an inspiration to friends, family, and co-workers alike, a paragon of quiet strength, determination, warmth, and endearing humor.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at 11:30 AM in Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, 11411 N. Michigan Road, Zionsville, IN 46077. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samuel R. Cohen Cycling Fund, c/o JCC Indianapolis, www.jccindy.org.
