Sandra Louise Learman, 78, of Los Angeles, California, died Thursday, June 5, 2014, in Carmel, Indiana. The youngest of two children she was born March 27, 1936, to Nathan and Katherine (Gerson) Jacobson. Sandy grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later moved with her young family to Los Angeles. There she developed a passion for political involvement, serving as President of the Palos Verdes Democratic Club and as an alternate delegate from California to the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami.
Sandy spent most of her career working with the public as a community liaison first representing the Southern California Rapid Transit District and then the South Coast Air Quality Management District. She cared deeply about human rights, focusing especially on social justice and hunger in the U.S. and developing nations. She loved going to the movies, watching Jeopardy, eating lobster, listening to jazz and visiting with her family and friends. Sandy's generous spirit and loving heart also touched her extended family, coworkers and their young children who she would shower with attention and gifts "just because."
Sandy is survived by her sons Lee Andrew Learman (husband of Beverly Helene Listick Learman) of Carmel, Indiana, and Richard Randall Learman (husband of Lucia Dewey Atwood) of Wakefield, Massachusetts, and her granddaughters Rebecca Lynn Learman and Lisa Nicole Learman. A memorial service and scattering of ashes is being planned off the southern California coast in accordance with her wishes. Memorial gifts may be made to Heifer International at http://www.heifer.org/gift-catalog/occasion/in-memory.html
May her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her!
