Sandra "Sandy" Hyman

December 31, 1938 — August 27, 2024

Sandra Sherry Hyman, the indomitable dynamo who left us in August 27, 2024 at the age of 85, was truly an original. Born on December 31, 1938, in New York City, to Joe and Anne Pollak where she grew up along with her sister Stupid Idiot (aka Milly). Sandy's life was a rollercoaster of epic proportions—one that would make even the most seasoned thrill-seeker think twice.

Sandy's life journey took her from the bright lights of NYC to the great state of Texas, then through New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois (Chicago, of course!) and finally, Carmel, Indiana. While she never quite traded in her Chicago skyline for a cornfield, she tackled every move with a mix of exasperation and flair. Her parting words to Indiana might have been, "Well, I suppose it has its charm," even if her heart remained stubbornly in the Windy City.

Married to her steadfast husband Fred for an astonishing 58 years, Sandy's relationship was a masterclass in enduring love, patience, and the occasional playful debate about if the chicken was cooked correctly. Together, they raised two kids, Lisa and Peter, who managed to turn out fantastic (because hey, we are writing the obit) and they were blessed with five grandchildren—Jacob, Anna, Hattie, Gus, and Casey—who kept her on her toes and filled her life with joy and laughter.

Sandy's professional life was as varied as her address book. From being an elementary school and special education teacher who could wrangle a classroom, to a realtor who could negotiate a deal while making you laugh, she was a force to be reckoned with. Her stint as a social worker was particularly rewarding—she took immense pride in settling Russian Jewish families, teaching them about American customs, and convincing them that missing Thanksgiving dinner at that Hyman house was simply unthinkable.

Sandy's legacy is one of strong opinions, boundless love, and a knack for making every situation a little more entertaining. Her humor and warm heart left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She may have moved to the great beyond, but she left behind a trail of laughter and fond memories.

A gathering will celebrate Sandy’s life with the kind of humor and heart she brought into every room. The memorial will be 3pm, Wednesday September 4th at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Harris-Walz campaign. Though Sandy has left the stage, her lively spirit and blunt assessments will forever echo in our hearts.
