Sandra “Sandy” Kay Smartz
78, of Indianapolis, passed away October 29th 2021 peacefully at home. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, she was born to Lawrence and Jean Leonard on June 3rd, 1943. Sandra was a graduate of Thomas Carr Howe High School and received her teaching degree from IUPUI. She spent her career helping and teaching others. She always gave and donated to children’s organizations.
Sandra attended Zionsville United Methodist Church and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. She spent most of her time at her grandkid's sporting events and other activities they were involved in. She was very dedicated to her two daughters and six grandkids. If you knew her, you loved her; and if she knew you, she loved you. She will always be remembered for her kind and generous spirit and her love for all she knew. She was also an avid reader and Township player. Her greatest joy was her family and grandkids.
Sandra is survived by her two daughters, Jennifer Kay Dell (Scott), and Kimberly Dawn Smartz (Walt Smithers); grandkids, Cody Smithers, Tyler Smithers, Decatur Dell, Dominick Dell,
Donovan Dell, and Brooklynn Smithers; sister, Brenda Gomez; brother, Norman Leonard (Beth); and nieces and nephews, James Gomez, Linda Gomez, David Leonard and Crystal Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Leonard and Jean (Warrick) Leonard; brother-in-law, James Gomez; and grandson, “Baby” Jordan Dell.
A memorial service will be held November 13th 2021 at 4pm at Zionsville United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zionsville United Methodist Children's Ministry or any children's foundation close to your heart.
