Sanford P. Schwartz, 89, passed away on June 6, 2023. He was the son of the late Eugene J. and Thelma Schwartz. He was born in Indianapolis on January 27, 1934. A graduate of Shortridge High School in 1951, he attended Butler University where he majored in Journalism, Radio, and TV. While attending Butler, he worked in the continuity department of Channel 6, WRTV. Upon graduation from Butler in 1955, he became the Coordinator of a daily television program on Channel 6… “What ‘s Your Bid” featuring the late Jim Shelton as M.C. and often appeared on camera with him.
In September 1956, Sanford was drafted into the U.S. Army. Upon completion of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, he was assigned to the Wyoming Military District in Cheyenne as the Public Information Specialist. In 1958 he received a direct commission as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Returning to civilian life in the fall of 1958, he began a career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana in their Public Relations Department serving as a writer and later editor of their company publications. As he advanced in corporate responsibilities, he developed several recognition programs for employees as well as special events that enhanced employment at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana. When the company built their first new headquarters at 120 West Market Street in 1971, he also became the coordinator of the employee 600 seat cafeteria as well as the executive dining room.
After 37 ½ year career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana, Sandford retired in 1997.
In 1998 he began a work association with the Jewish Community Center that lasted 14 years before retiring again.
In 1960, Sanford married Dee (Doris) Muschel and recently celebrated 62 years of togetherness. They were blessed with three children who survive: Dr. Alan (Jennifer) Schwartz, Todd (Leslie) Schwartz and Robyn (Josh) Plaskoff along with six grandchildren, Ethan, Jonathan, Samantha, Emily Schwartz and Ryan and Ian Plaskoff. Sanford was preceded in death by his three sisters, Frances Greenberg, Mary Ann Freudenthal and Rosetta Siegel and brother Howard Schwartz.
Sanford was a member of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck and served as its Men’s Club president in 1980. He was also a member of Congregation Shaarey Tefilla.
Funeral services will be held on June 8, 2023 at 1:00 pm, at Congregation Shaarey Tefillah, 3085 W. 116th Street, Carmel, IN, 46032.
The family will be sitting shiva at the Plaskoff residence following the burial until 8 PM. They will also be sitting Friday from 1-4 PM, Saturday 4 -9 PM, and Sunday 5-8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Congregation Shaarey Tefilla or a charity of the donor’s choice.
