Miriam "Shirley" Shane Careskey, 92, died peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by family and friends on October 28, 2014 in Laguna Hills, California.
Born June 28, 1922, she was the daughter of Doris Ginsler Shane and Martin Shane.
Shirley graduated from Shortridge High School. She worked in her father's downtown Indianapolis restaurant for many years before marrying Bob on May 3, 1944 during his brief leave from the U.S. Navy during World War II. She was preceded in death by her loving brother Richard H. Shane.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 70 years, Robert M. Careskey of Carmel, Indiana and 3 children, Judy Rose Careskey of Mission Viejo, California, Steven James Careskey of Indianapolis and Joshua Marc Careskey (Nancy) of Pine Point Beach, Maine. Shirley leaves 3 adoring grandchildren, Kate Sarah Careskey of Indianapolis, Holly Elizabeth Careskey Armbrust, M.D., MPH (Kurt Armbrust) of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Matthew J. Careskey, M.D. (Siobhan Tellez) of San Francisco. Also surviving Shirley are 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley will be always remembered by her loved ones as a loving, devoted wife and mother who lived simply and loved her family unconditionally. Simple, quiet time with her husband and children was always her favorite activity. In addition, she enjoyed baking and gardening and was considered excellent at both.
Shirley was a longtime member of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation and the local chapter of Hadassah where she was an active volunteer for many years and became a lifetime member. Her positions were Donor Chairman, Cards, Certificate and Trees for Israel Chairman and she was a gracious hostess for numerous fund-raising events. She was, in addition, a long term supporter of the Yad Vashem Memorial, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union as well as numerous other organizations and charities important and dear to her.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Indianapolis Chapter of Hadassah or the American Lung Association.
Shirley found her greatest happiness in life's simple things and moments. She would want to be remembered in that way and would want all her family and friends to know how much she loved us all.
A memorial service will be held at the Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary, 11411 N Michigan Road, on Friday November 21, 2014 at 2PM.
