Shirley Arlene Rainey

93, of Indianapolis, joined the lord and her late beloved husband, Raphael Joseph “Jack” Rainey, in heaven on Friday, July 23, 2021. Shirley was born January 26, 1928 in Ortonville, MI to the late Arthur and Creta Robinson.

Shirley (lovingly referred to as “Shirl”) and her husband, Jack, were married for 56 years. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carmel, IN and was a long-time member of The Robert E. Kennington Post 34 American Legion Auxiliary in Broad Ripple where she served as treasurer.  As part of the Auxiliary she was instrumental in the support of the Indiana Veteran's Home and Indiana Girls State.

Shirley was valedictorian of her graduating high school class, a proud alum and avid fan of Michigan State University and loved the Indianapolis Colts. She was an extremely talented seamstress, crafter and interior designer. She and Jack were league bowlers, excellent euchre partners, and music lovers - especially big band music.  You could find them dancing at every chance they could, and there was always music playing in the house.  They also enjoyed searching for and collecting antiques.

She adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Shirl always kept pictures of all of them close by and wanted to hear any and all stories about them.

Shirley is survived by her children, Christopher (April) Rainey, Ronald Rainey, Linda (the late Randy) Shambaugh, Lora (Brian) Rhoades, Admiral Charles (Christine) Rainey, and Janice Rainey; siblings, John (the late Gwen) Robinson, Rich (Lynn) Robinson, and Margie (the late Jack) Tindall; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Rainey; son, Douglas Rainey; parents, Arthur and Creta Robinson; brother, Arthur Robinson; sister, Joann (Richard) Franz; and grandson, Wesley Shambaugh.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hooverwood Living , the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association .
