Stanley Ward Slocum

January 18, 1930 — July 31, 2013

Stanley Ward Slocum
83, passed away on July 31, 2013, in Indianapolis. His wife Carol, daughter Barbara, and son Rick were at his side.

Stan was born on January 18, 1930 in Rockaway Beach, Queens, NY -- where he spent his childhood -- to the late Adelbert and Anne Slocum. He graduated from Antioch College in 1952, where he met and married his wife of 62 years, Carol Foerster Slocum.

During the Korean War, Stan was stationed in Alabama, and later worked two years for the US government, interviewing refugees in Germany. Barbara was born in Munich in 1955. The family returned to the US and moved to Dansville, NY, where Stan worked for Foster Wheeler, and where Rick was born in 1958. After living in Dansville and Rochester, NY, the family moved to Indianapolis in 1968.

Stan worked as Personnel Director for Herff Jones and Meridian Mutual. In 1977, he became the owner and served as President of the Snelling & Snelling employment agency in downtown Indianapolis until he retired.

Stan was active in the First Congregational Church until his death, serving on several committees. He also tutored students at School 42.

Stan's passions included traveling, photography, camping, canoeing, hiking, snorkeling, playing bridge and ping pong. He especially loved seeing his family, including his two grandchildren, Hannah and Ben. He also enjoyed watching football, following baseball, and participating in the Robin Run community in recent years. He will be remembered for his integrity, loyalty, strong and optimistic personality, the fascinating stories he told and for his special rapport with children.

Stan is survived by Carol, Barbara Miller (James) of Bellevue, Wash., Rick (Phyllis Strauss) of Bryn Mawr, Pa, and New York City, and grandchildren Hannah and Ben Slocum.

There will be a celebration of Stan's life at the First Congregational Church at 7171 N. Pennsylvania St on August 10th at 2 pm. Memorial contributions can be made to Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio; the First Congregational Church of Indianapolis; or to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Arrangements entrusted to Aaron Ruben Nelson Mortuary. Online condolences may be offered at www.arnmortuary.com.
