Susan Kay Bertrand De Witt R.N. B.S.

Our dear mother Susan Kay Bertrand DeWitt passed away on August 22, 2023, at the age of 77. She was a wonderful mother who is survived by her son, Michael; daughter in-law Desiree; brother, Tom; a niece, nephew, and many other adopted family members. Susan was loved and cherished by so many in and around her community.

After graduating from Saint Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing – Marion College with a Bachelors, she began working at Saint Vincent's downtown. There she was a charge nurse on the geriatric floor. Later she moved on to Saint Vincent's 86th Street campus and began working as a geriatric nurse with the Institute on Aging. She remained with Saint Vincent's for over 45 years; during which time she pioneered and developed the care manager program and was often known to her patients as the “rent-a-daughter.” Susan was a leader in her industry and brought many needed care advancements to the geriatric program throughout her career.

Susan took her extensive knowledge and love for people into her personal life; she cared for countless others including her family members and friends--many knew her as “nurse mom”. She was a truly selfless individual who loved others unconditionally and never asked for anything in return.

She was a mom, sister, nurse, rent-a-daughter, caretaker, friend, animal lover, avid reader, and lover of people. An angel among us whom we were lucky to have. We know she will continue to provide that guiding light and her wonderful sense of humor from above.

A volunteer for numerous charitable organizations over the years, one of Susan’s parting requests was that in lieu of flowers for herself, donations be made instead on her behalf. Suggested charities include: Alzheimer’s Association ,

Joy’s House Broad Ripple , and FIDO – Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside

Services will be held on her birthday, September 30th at Our Lady of the Peace Cemetery, 9001 Haverstick Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46240. Calling will begin at 10 AM with a Nursing Honor Guard presentation at 11:30 AM. Funeral Mass will be held at 12 PM and inurnment will follow at 1 PM.

Friends are welcome to join the family for a luncheon celebration at Saint Matthew Catholic Church, 4100 E 56th St, Indianapolis, IN 46220 at 2 PM.
