Suzannah K. Arnold
passed away peacefully on the morning of June 23, 2013, 37 years to the day after the passing of her youngest son, Randall. We celebrate the life of our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who leaves behind her sons Michael; Stephen and his wife Laurie, and their sons Jordan and Dylan; Jeffrey and his wife Christine, and their daughter Jennifer (Michael) and son Christopher (Caitlin); Gregory and his wife Denny, and their son Brendon and daughters Brittany (Brian), Brianna and Danielle (Grant); and her daughter, Kristen Kienker. She was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren: Brooklyn, Gavin, Halyn, Ian, Lauren, Liam, Lilly, Ruby, Steven, and Zachary. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dave Kienker. She is also survived by her former husband, Robert D. Arnold, MD, and his wife Neva Y. Arnold, Ph.D., with whom she maintained a loving relationship throughout her life, allowing our Family Circle to remain unbroken.
Suzannah was born Jessie Marie Wyne in Deputy, Indiana on January 25, 1920. She spent her early years attending school and working on her family's farm in southern Indiana. She had very fond memories of helping her parents and grandparents with various farm chores. It was not unusual for her to spend a full day hoeing tobacco, or to milk ten cows twice a day- through these activities she learned to enjoy her own solitary company. During these years her social life centered around the Bethany Baptist Church, where she was also the pianist for many years. She attended Indiana University, where she acquired her nickname "Sue" from college friends, and she graduated with a degree in social work. In 1945 she married Robert D. Arnold, who became an obstetrician and gynecologist with a large medical practice in Indianapolis. Together they raised a family of six children. Although she was a "solo traveler" after their divorce, she always maintained a loving home for her children and their friends--often called (with a smile) "Arnold's Happy Haven," where any young person in need could find comfort, wisdom, and unconditional love.
A lifelong spiritual explorer, Suzannah deeply investigated many dimensions of religion and esoteric philosophy and studied many traditions, including Jungian psychology, numerology, New Thought Christianity, and Christian Science. During the last part of her life she was a Christian who had accepted Jesus as her Savior. She is the discoverer of what she called The Word Code, a method for decoding spiritual messages "hidden in plain sight" in everyday language; she hoped The Word Code would help people better understand God's Word. This work is explained in more detail in her blog, Click here to be linked to Suzannah's Blog.
In the late 1980s she wrote these words about our family as part of her legacy to her children and their children: "...at the end of one's life, if one has a good family, I can't think of a better product to show for those years - very real, visible, and worthwhile." She accomplished this goal gloriously. She will be deeply missed.
One of the traditions in our family that was the most meaningful to Suzannah was our Family Covenant, spoken at every family gathering:
Love is the Spirit of this Family,
and Service is its Law.
To Dwell Together in Peace,
To Seek the Truth in Love,
and to Help One Another.
This is Our Covenant.
Amen
