Tobias "Toby" Cohen

Tobias "Toby" Cohen,
95, of Indianapolis, passed away February 16, 2019.
He was born January 15, 1924 in Indianapolis to the late Joseph Cohen and Eva Hartman Cohen. Toby graduated from Shortridge High School and was then drafted into the Army. During WWII, he was a combat medic in Italy. When the war ended, he attended Butler University.
Toby and his brother, Nate, opened Army-Navy surplus stores around the city. The last store was located at 71st and Michigan Road. During his 55 years, he and his brother helped a number of veterans, police personnel, Boy Scout troops and fire department personnel as well as the homeless.
His loving family loved his stories, charm, loving disposition and giving personality. He loved having friends and family to come and play tennis and swim in the pool. Having played tennis for 70 years, he taught a few people how to play the game.
Toby is survived by his wife of 27 years, Linda "Lynn" K. Cohen; step-son, Christopher L. Gillette (Christina); five grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Ruby E. Dinning of Wasilla, AK. Also many nephews and nieces; great-nephews and great-nieces; and two great-great nephews (one of which is his name-sake). He was preceded in death by his brothers, Reuben, Jess, Nate, Albert and Arthur; and his sisters, Esther Fogel, Belle Pels and Ethel Lazar.

A Celebration of Toby's life will be held at 1:30 PM on April 27, 2019 at Robin Run Village Chapel inside the Tower, 5354 West 62nd Street, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
