Virginia Vernice Herring

January 31, 1916 — December 22, 2014

Virginia Vernice Parker Herring, age 98, of Zionsville IN died December 22, 2014 at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis, IN. She was born in Morgan County, on the family farm near Little Point, IN on January 31, 1916 to Verne Clyde Parker and Nettie M. F. Wallace Parker. She attended Belle Union School where she later taught. She graduated from Central Normal Teacher's College in 1942 and married Frederick Clayton Herring on June 6, 1943.

They moved to Indianapolis where she taught third grade with passion and tenacity in the Indianapolis Public Schools and was known for her talents in remedial reading until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of the teacher's honorary Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Carmel IN. She served as a Scout leader and loved to play bridge.

Frederick died tragically in 1970. They had one child, Malcolm (Zionsville), three grandsons, Nathan (Seattle), Aaron (Phoenix) and Matthew (Encinitas CA) and four great grandchildren, Mabry, Emma, Levi and Calliope who all survive her. Her siblings, George H. Parker, Wallace R Parker, and Norma F Parker Seller, like her parents, predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held December 29, 2014 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Zionsville United Methodist Church, 9644 Whitestown Road, Zionsville IN 46077. This will be followed by interment at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9350 E. Washington St. Indianapolis, IN 46229. Gifts in her memory may be given to St. Vincent Hospital Foundation, 2001 W. 86th St. Indianapolis, IN 46260.
