Vladimir Shkiler, 92 of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on September 22, 2023 in Hooverwood Nursing Home where he has been a resident since 2019. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by the members of his beloved family. He was born on October 27, 1930 in Odessa region in Ukraine. His father fought in the World War II and after the war became a school principal. His mother was an elementary school teacher. Vladimir finished college and became a mechanical engineer.
In 1993, he and his family emigrated to the United States to escape antisemitism in Ukraine. Despite his age, he enthusiastically started to learn English, study American culture, and was not afraid to work at various low-paying jobs.
Throughout his life his was an avid book reader as well as musical records and antiques collector. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Gita with whom he has been married for 57 years; son, Alex (Natalia); grandson, Mark; and his sister, Ellen (Jacob, of blessed memory) Dardyk of New York.
His funeral will take place on September 24, 2023 at Indianapolis Hebrew Cemetery North at 11:00 am. Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary is taking care of the arrangements.
